Located in Mombasa, Bombolulu Workshops for the handicapped was founded in 1969 as a rehabilitation center. The job prospects for disabled people outside such organizations are extremely limited, and Bombolulu’s work has grown over the years now having four sheltered workshops supporting around 160 physically disabled craftsmen and women. Bombolulu is a self sustaining, non-profit, Fair-Trade organization that is a programme of The Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya and a registered member of the World Fair Trade Organization. Bombolulu exists to enable persons with disabilities to overcome their physical limitations and empower them economically and socially to become self reliant and fully integrated members of their communities.
Bombolulu provides housing for its artisans, four workshops from which they produce jewelry, textile, wood and leather products, many from recycled materials, and cultural homesteads to encourage the diversity of the various Kenyan tribes. Bombolulu also provides social benefits, such as a clinic, nursery school, HIV prevention, social hall, and sports to its workers.
